Terms used within the Personal Archive Creator and Personal Archive Viewer.
Personal Archive Creator Glossary and terms
Burning: This refers to creating a CD with a copy of the PAC item list using a CD-R/W drive connected to your computer. This is a tool bar option.
Category: The main folder for subcategories and items. This serves as an organizational method of items.
Collapse: (Collapsing the item list) This refers to the ability to reduce the representation of the item list by hiding the documents and leaving only the categories and subcategories. Sections of the list can be collapse by using the mouse to click on the subcategory or category.
Custom Categories: Categories that you defined using the CatalogVX edit Category features.
Description: A sentence that is used as a reference to an item. This sentence is entered using the Edit dialog. Items can than be searched by sentence using the search feature of CatalogVX .
Document: Any file that is included as a part of and item list is considered a document in the context of CatalogVX . The term item and document are used interchangeably.
Error item: An item that has been corrupted by the system or a virus on the computer.
The item can still be view by CatalogVX ; however, a CD will not be able to be created until this item is removed from the CatalogVX item list.
Expand: This refers to the ability to view all in the image items under a category, including the subcategory and documents (items). Sections of the list can expand, to provide more detail, by using the mouse to click on the subcategory or category.
File: A collection of data stored on your computer's hard drive or network.
Icon: A small picture on your computer that will perform a specific function, when clicked using the mouse. Icon appears on all the tool bars; by moving your mouse of the icons, a description text will appear over the icon.
Item: Any file that is included as part of the CatalogVX list of files.
Item List: A list of documents, pictures, and other type of files that are categories.
Image: Any picture file that on the computer, CD, or that is part of a document. Most images are created using a digital cameral or scanner. In CatalogVX , images are used to archive scanned documents into the PAC item list so that they can be burned into a CD. Common picture files usually ends with one of the suffixes of jpg, bmp, tiff, gif. Most scanner will scan a document as a picture in "scan file name".bmp (Bitmap) format.
Item List: An organized group of files consisting of categories, subcategories, and items.
An item list can be save, retrieve, and changed within the CatalogVX software. All item list are saved with the *.PAC extension name on the computers hard drive. By default the software will be saved under the "C:\My Documents" directory.
Keyword: A word that is used as a reference to an item. This word is entered in the Edit dialog. Items can then be searched by keyword using the search features of CatalogVX .
Modify: The ability to change an item's category, subcategory, keyword, or description while in the Edit dialog.
Merging: The ability to add one item list stored on your hard drive or network to the existing item list. This is a menu item.
Marking: The process of identifying an item for future operations. This is a menu item. Once an item is mark, it will appear as a light blue document icon.
Missing Item: An item that is no longer on the computer or network; however, the item still is referred to by the item list. An item that has been renamed by another user or program; however, the item is being referred to by the old name on the image list.
Operation: Any command that is process by a user with the keyboard or a menu option. An action performed in CatalogVX by the user.
PAC: The abbreviation for the Personal Archive Creator catalog list.
Preferences: The ability to change the behavior of the CatalogVX software. You may use the Edit | Preference menu for additional options.
Remove: The ability to remove an item from the image list. The item is only removed from the list not the hard drive or network.
Rename: change the name of a picture item. This feature will change the name of an item on both the item list and on the actual file on the computer's hard drive. This feature is only limited to picture files.
Save: The ability to store an item list on your local hard drive or Network. The item list is saved as a PAC file. The PAC file can than be retrieved in PAC at a latter time. This is a tool bar option.
Save As: The ability to store an item list on your local hard drive or network under a user specified file name. The item list is saved as a PAC file. The PAC file can than be retrieved in PAC at a latter time. This is a tool bar option.
Scanning: This refers to using the scanner to add an image item into the PAC item list. Once the image is part of the list, the image is than referred to as an item.
Subcategory: A folder under a Category. Subcategories are used to organize items of the same type and purpose under the main category.
Zoom In: The ability to view an image on the multi-viewer in more detail. This is like using a magnifying class to view the picture. There are four zoom levels used in CatalogVX .
Zoom Out: The ability to view an image from a greater distance. This is like moving away from the image, so as you move away, the image get smaller.
